  • Columbus, OH

Job Description

Chief Medical Officer

Central Ohio Primary Care (COPC) is seeking a full time Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at our central business office in Westerville, OH. The CMO serves as COPC's senior clinical leader, responsible for the quality, consistency, and direction of clinical practice across more than 80 sites and approximately 450 physicians and 150 APPs. The CMO sets the clinical strategy, shapes operational policy, and ensures that COPC's care delivery model reflects both its commitment to patients and its identity as an independent, physician-led organization.

The CMO leads COPC's physician wellbeing program — not as a peripheral initiative, but as a core organizational priority — championing the conditions that allow physicians to practice sustainably and with purpose.

The CMO reports to the CEO and works in close partnership with operational, administrative, and quality leadership to ensure that clinical programs are integrated, effective, and continuously improving.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED:

  • COPC Medical Directors to include:
  • Comprehensive Care (Home Palliative Care)
  • Same Day Center and Pediatric Support Center
  • Vera Practices (Direct to Employer)
  • Inpatient Medical Director
  • Agilon Medical Director
  • Value Based Care Medical Director
  • Sr. Director, Medical Services Physician Wellbeing Coach

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Strategy & Quality

  • Contribute to COPC's organizational strategy as the senior clinical voice, ensuring decisions reflect a commitment to high-quality, efficient patient care.
  • Define and lead a disciplined approach to care redesign — identifying opportunities to improve outcomes, reduce waste, and eliminate unnecessary cost.
  • Develop systems to measure resource utilization and clinical outcomes across COPC's ambulatory sites and translate findings into actionable improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team to develop, implement, and continuously improve patient-focused care protocols and policies.
  • Offer guidance on the development and revision of clinical policies and procedures and ensure successful implementation across COPC sites.

Value-Based Care & Population Health

  • Build organizational proficiency in population health management, equipping practices to understand and manage patient panels in a value-driven way.
  • Collaborate with payer partners through regular joint operating meetings, driving quality gap closure initiatives and advocating for COPC patients and providers.
  • Set annual quality and expense reduction targets for clinical programs; regularly review cost, utilization, and outcomes data to track progress.
  • Participate in Joint Operating Committees with insurance plans and strategic partners.

Physician Leadership & Wellbeing

  • Provide direct leadership, support, and accountability for COPC's medical directors, serving as their primary executive partner.
  • Ensure physician compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, as well as standards set by the Joint Commission and other governing bodies.
  • Lead efforts to improve physician satisfaction and reduce burnout — driving cross-functional collaboration to identify and eliminate administrative barriers, and championing process and technology solutions that restore time and focus to patient care.
  • Conduct clinical performance reviews for prospective physicians and shareholder candidates.
  • Serve as the primary executive point of contact for physician clinical performance and behavioral concerns — working with medical directors, HR, and legal counsel as appropriate to investigate, document, and resolve issues in a manner that is fair, consistent, and protective of COPC's patients, physicians, and culture.
  • Facilitate initiatives to improve both physician and patient satisfaction across COPC sites.

Governance & External Affairs

  • Serve as a non-voting member of the COPC Board of Directors, presenting regularly on clinical quality performance and strategic opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Board on quality metrics, improvement priorities, and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Identify market trends and emerging opportunities, contributing to business development efforts and presenting findings to the Board as appropriate.
  • Serve on COPC committees as needed, including the Compensation, Compliance, Credentialing, Peer Review, and Physician Behavior Committees.
  • Represent COPC as the public-facing clinical spokesperson for media and community matters of clinical significance.
  • Engage with external organizations to advocate for primary care at the local and national level.
