If you are like me, you’re looking everywhere for signs of hope.
Amid a crisis that will define a generation and challenge our very way of life –hope is in such short supply. We don’t often find it in the 24-hour news cycle, or on social media, or even from our circle of friends and family. People are feeling despair, helpless, and hopeless. The good news is there is a place of hope!
In the Bible, we read the story of one of God’s most able men, Joshua. He stood up at the end of his life and reflected on all he had been through -–one crisis after another. In his 20 years as the leader, Joshua led the people of Israel through a Jordan River crossing, the fall of Jericho, and in and through the hard lessons of the defeat at Ai. Joshua’s journey is a reminder that as Christians, we are equipped for crises. Joshua, in his farewell speech, challenges the people with these words, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
Our power to overcome in crises doesn’t’ depend on our abilities, but in Whom we Serve!
As parents, that lesson is even more essential. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of parents are living in a new normal; Whether that is finding new streams of income or working from home with children at home or dealing with the loss of a job. I don’t make light of these challenges, but consider this an opportunity to turn to God in a way we haven’t before.
So I ask you, “Today, what are we going to choose to do?”
While many families are at home together, we can seize the opportunity to connect with our children–spiritually. Find out where they are in their spiritual development and journey, and develop a plan to help them deepen their knowledge of God’s word, and to be confident when they articulate their faith. Ultimately, to prepare them to understand God’s word and its application in their lives and choices.
